Frequently Asked Questions

What Illnesses and Injuries Do We Treat?

We treat non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries in dogs and cats, such as vomiting, diarrhea, limping, lacerations, skin issues, ear and eye problems, urinary issues, and coughing.

We are there for you when your pet develops an unexpected illness or injury that needs quick attention but isn’t life-threatening. Here are common issues that we treat.

  • Vomiting & diarrhea
  • Itching & skin rashes
  • Lethargy & malaise
  • Limping
  • Lacerations
  • Eye and ear disorders
  • Coughing & sneezing
  • Urinary tract problems
  • Fever
  • Compassionate euthanasia

We do not treat life-threatening emergencies. If your pet has been hit by a vehicle, is seizing, has difficulty breathing, or requires overnight hospitalization, they should go to a full emergency hospital immediately.

When Should I Bring My Pet to the Vet?

Bring your pet in if symptoms have lasted more than a few hours, are getting worse, or are keeping your pet from eating, drinking, or resting normally. Don’t wait until morning if you’re worried.

Some signs sound minor but can indicate serious issues. Bring your pet in if you notice:

  • Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
  • Straining or inability to urinate
  • Blood in urine or stool
  • Breathing issues, coughing, or lethargy
  • Skin problems that worsen or spread rapidly
  • Limping, swelling, or obvious pain
  • Unusual behavior like hiding, pacing, or disinterest in food

Our care is tailored to intervene early, before small issues become major.

Why Choose UrgentPaws?

UrgentPaws is faster than waiting for your regular vet and significantly less expensive than a 24/7 emergency hospital. We offer private exam rooms, transparent pricing reviewed before any treatment, and the option to stay with your pet through the whole visit, including in our treatment room.

When your pet is hurting or isn’t feeling well, waiting is the hardest part, and the most expensive option isn’t always the right one. UrgentPaws is built for the in-between: faster than waiting to see your primary vet, and calmer and more affordable than the ER.

At UrgentPaws, we offer:

  • “Save My Spot” from anywhere: Join our waitlist directly on our website. Upon arrival, we immediately assess your pet’s status. We do our best to treat right away, but prioritize the most critical patients so timing may shift if more urgent cases arrive.
  • A calm, stress-free environment: From the moment you walk into our clinic, we will escort you to a private exam room, no waiting in a traditional lobby.
  • The opportunity to be with your pet through the entire visit: If you would like, you are welcome to come into our treatment room and remain by your pet’s side while they are receiving the care they need.
  • Skilled veterinary staff: Our team is trained specifically for the non-life-threatening emergencies that send most pets to the ER including vomiting & diarrhea, lacerations, limping, ear infections and itchy skin. We are led by Dr. Cassie Knapp, a 17-year practicing veterinarian with extensive emergency room experience. We move quickly, diagnose accurately, and tell you exactly what we found.
  • No surprise bills: After taking your pet’s medical history and vitals, our doctors will perform a physical exam. Based on their findings, we create a tailored treatment plan that includes pricing. You decide what to approve; we won’t run a single test or provide treatment without your permission.
  • Urgent care wait times and prices: Most after-hours visits don’t need an emergency hospital, they need a vet, fast and at a fair price. We can provide the quality care you need without the inconvenience of the ER.
How Much Does a Visit Cost?

Our exam fee – which covers our doctors’ physical examination and our technicians collecting medical history and patient vitals – is $160. Based on their findings, our doctor will develop a specific treatment plan, including pricing, for your pet. You will decide what to approve on the treatment plan, and we will not proceed forward until we have your consent.

Do You Accept Pet Insurance or Have Financing Options?

Yes – we make it easy to pay for the care your pet needs. We accept all major pet insurance plans on a reimbursement basis: you pay at the time of visit, and we’ll provide an itemized invoice and any medical records your insurer needs to process your claim.

We also offer financing through CareCredit and Cherry. Both let you apply in minutes from your phone right in our clinic, so you can find out what you qualify for before treatment begins.

Do I Need an Appointment or Can I Walk In?

No appointment is required; you are welcome to walk straight in! However, if you use “Save My Spot” then you can sign up for our waitlist. Upon arrival we immediately assess your pet’s status. We do our best to treat right away but prioritize the most critical patients so timing may shift if more urgent cases arrive.

Am I Permitted to Stay With My Pet?

Yes – every room in our clinic is open to you, including our treatment room! In most instances, we find our patients do much better when they are next to their owner, including in our treatment room. In some rare cases, your pet may be better on their own (e.g., they are trying to protect you) and we may ask you to give them some space to ensure they receive the best care possible. However, in these situations, we will communicate everything to you before proceeding. We want you to be involved in the visit as you would like to be.

Do I Have To Go Inside the Treatment Room?

No – we give our owners the option to come with us into the treatment room or remain in one of our private exam rooms – the choice is yours.

How Should I Prepare for My Visit?

Before your visit, use “Save My Spot” to join our waitlist, keep your pet calm and comfortable, and gather a short symptom history (e.g., when it started, what changed, and any medications they’re on). You may also bring prior medical records (if they are readily available) and a vomit/stool sample, if applicable.

While waiting to be seen, you can support your pet’s comfort:

  • Keep them calm and warm
  • Ensure access to water (offer gently if needed)
  • Rope off stairs or slippery floors if mobility is limited
  • Collect a brief symptom history, when it started and what changed

Please don’t give human medication – many common medications are dangerous for pets.

Do You Treat Any Other Animals in Addition to Cats and Dogs?

We primarily treat cats and dogs. However, some of our veterinarians are also trained to treat exotics such as snakes, rabbits, gerbils, turtles and lizards. If you are considering coming in for an exotic animal, please call our clinic in Thousand Oaks at (805) 738-6030 to confirm if our veterinarian on shift will be able to treat your pet.
